Last Post & A Launch Party!

Hello, hello my wonderful readers!  Don't worry, this isn't my last post ever, just the final post at this particular address.  I've been working for several weeks now to rebrand under the new name:

Studio27byJenniferAdams

You can click here to hop on over and join me at the new site where I'm ready and waiting.  It's an internet launch party with digital cupcakes, confetti and a full explanation of why I'm tweaking the brand!

But in the meantime, I'll leave this blog with one final thrifting post.  Enjoy!

Cherub Statue

Originally white ceramic (and intended to be a soap dish) this cute little statue was $2 and received a gold spray paint makeover.

Milk Gass Bowls

This set of iridescent milk glass bowls was only $3.  I used a couple of them to serve snacks at a recent mermaid birthday party- post coming soon at the new address πŸ˜‰

Large Canvas

This giant, blank canvas was under $20 and screaming my name.  It's already been painted of course and now contains a storybook like scene of the sky at twilight.

Golden Flatware

I found an entire bag of golden flatware for $9.  It didn't include what I consider a complete collection, but a girl's gotta start somewhere, right?

Bakery Candles

The little cupcake candles absolutely smell like real chocolate and I can't get enough of them, just walking by them smells great!  The cupcakes and cinnamon bun (scentless) candles together were $3.

Wall Mounted Shelves

Already painted gold and marked 'made in Italy', this set of shelves was only $5.

Now that catches me up on the last few months of thrifting finds.  Don't forget to join me at

Treasure Hunting & Thrifting - Summer Glassware 2018

Half of the treasure hunting season has passed without an update, so I'm going to fix that today with a few pretty glassware finds:

Milk Glass Lamp

I finally found a cute little lamp for the top of the refrigerator  (Goodwill, $5) and I love the soft glow that it provides in the evenings.

(You can click here to read more about my lamp obsession)

Milk Glass Dish & Bowl

Both thrift store finds and $2 apiece.  The dish will end probably up organizing small items in my crafting space and the bowl has been added to the rest of the mixing bowls in the kitchen.

Glass Cake Stand

I decided to pick this stand up even though it is without a dome - that's me 'branching out' and 'broadening my horizons' 😁  I found it treasure hunting for $5.

Free Vases

I'm telling you, it happens.  Every once in awhile I happen upon somebody so intent on purging their home that they are giving away things for free.  This was one of those times so I ended up with two more vases from a yard sale.

Black Milk Glass

Yay, yay, yay!  I finally found some colored milk glass!  This set of black plates and one dish were $7.  Not bad considering they are vintage Arcoroc from France πŸ’—

You all know I love my milk glass.  While I have tons of white and two jadeite (beautiful green) pieces, I would like to expand my collection to include black, pink, red and blue.  I probably won't display all of the colors at one time though.  Maybe black with Halloween decor and red for Valentine's Day...or maybe just have the pieces on hand for various party themes...I'm not sure yet.

(You can click here to read more about my collection)

Thrifting Haul

A trip to Goodwill brings a lot of decor for less than $25!
Bonus:  Color of the week tags mean 50% the item and Facebook Friday nets 20% all regular priced items!

Read on to see what I found this time:

Frame $4.99

I can always use another quality photo frame, especially when they are already finished in my favorite color.  This frame is now waiting in my closet for the next photo project that I put together.

Milk Glass .59 & 1.99

As I've been using my milk glass pieces more and more throughout the house, I 'need' to keep a fully stocked supply ready and on hand.  ....Was that believable? Did you guys buy that one?  😁😁😁

Tassels .99 & 1.99

Still in their original packaging, I thought these decorative tassels were absolutely beautiful.  I will probably end up using them with curtains, but for now they are tucked away.  Since we plan on moving in the future I have a bin where I keep decorative items that I want to use later.

Baskets 3.99

I'm always on the lookout for linen lined wicker baskets, so when I saw this set of four I was really happy.  The chocolate brown satin ribbon wasn't my favorite, but that came off easily enough.  Now I use a couple of them next to the bed to stash phone chargers, Chapstick and Kleenex.  The other two are empty but on standby for the next time I need them πŸ˜‰

Statues $6.99

I have a thing for statuary and these were no exception.  Made from resin, they are lightweight and easily handled but still have the look of heavy stone.  After a good scrub I placed them on the French table in my closet room.

(You can click here to read more about that table)

And that was my Goodwill haul.

A Thrifted Bedside Table

About a year ago I was thrifting at the local Goodwill store when I came across this pretty, two drawer cabinet for $20.  It was designed to be a large file cabinet, but I thought it would make the perfect bedside table for Husby.

Husby's  'Table'

I think I've talked about this before, but I'm not a go-out-and-buy type of person.  For one thing, I think a lot of people spend too much money on brand new things that they really don't need (oops, did my Granny just pop out of my mouth?!?! πŸ˜†).  The whole consumerism mentality bugs me as it's wasteful, unnecessary and bad for the environment. But treasure hunting and thrifting?  Sign. Me. Up!

I absolutely love going out and finding a perfect item at a garage sale or thrift store.  Not only am I saving a ton of money, but I feel good to be recycling too.  Also, it's just plain fun!

I have to admit though, that there is no guarantee of finding exactly what you are looking for the moment you decide you want it.  So instead of completing a space all at once, I'll make do until I come across that perfect item.  Hence, you can see in the picture the closet organizing shelves that Husby had been using prior to me finding the cabinet.  The shelves were neat, clean and served their purpose, but I like to have things pretty too 😁

As Was

Here is a shot of the file cabinet in it's original state.  The large size is perfect for Husby as he can now fit a lamp, his laptop, phone, remotes, drink and a plate of food with room left over 😎  It is also big enough that I can comfortably sit on top of it when I want to say, "Hey, lets talk a long time about stuff" - because men love that. they love talking a very long time about stuff....just kidding.  I don't really bug him like that....that much! πŸ˜€πŸ˜‚πŸ˜„  And really, he's the best.  He actually does spend quite a bit of time talking with me ❤

Anyway, what I didn't like about the cabinet was the color of the drawer pulls, the dark finish of the wooden top and I wasn't sure about the fat, rounded legs.

Painted Pulls

Right away I took of the drawer pulls and spray painted them my favorite shiny gold. I also removed the legs from the bottom.  You can't see it in the photos, but the cabinet now sits directly on the floor.

The Top

After checking out the top, I could see that it is a veneer laminate.  I could sand it down easily enough If I wanted to repaint it, but I would rather it was a lighter wood top.  I decided to keep the wood and paint combination ('cause it's my favorite) but lighten the top with some sort of covering.  I briefly thought about some sort of framed mirror, but yeah, he'd end up breaking that eventually πŸ˜‡  So in the meantime I tossed an old towel up their just to protect the surface from food an water.  And you know what?  I ended up really liking the way it lightened the wood, so.....

Table Cloth & Accessories

....I pulled out this linen table cloth and folded it to fit the top instead.  I mean he eats there anyway, right? πŸ˜‰  Then I decided to play around with a few accessories to see how it would look.  A large picture frame, a couple battery candles and an assortment of milk glass did the trick.

So far the items have been able to sit there and not get broken or be in the way, so I think it's going to work.  I wouldn't mind a lamp that was a little larger though.......😊

I Love Lamps!

I love the addition of lamps in my home.  Of course we already have the standard ceiling lights, but I like to be able to alter the lighting within rooms.  Lamplight is great for additional task lighting (such as at a desk) but also gives a cozy glow to the space that can't be replicated with an overhead light.

That being said, I am well on the way to having a gorgeous (and thrifted) milk glass lamp in every room!

Read on to see my a couple of  new addition:

While browsing through Good Will this past Spring, I found these TWO milk glass lamps for a total of $15.  I knew the dirty old shades would have to be replaced and of course the natural wood needed to be painted (Sorry Dad 😁), but couldn't wait to take them home.

The lamp in the top photo was a standard tabletop lamp, but the one in the bottom photo had this really cool built-in bowl.

I thought it would be a great makeup table lamp for myself -or my Baby Girl- with the bowl making a perfect storage area for pretty jewelry or hair accessories.  But...... -cut to my garage a day or so later-  .....and just as I finished with they very last layer of paint.....I dropped the lamp onto the concrete floor.  Oops! πŸ˜•

*Moving on*

My remaining lamp, all clean and pretty white after a bit of spray paint.

I didn't break this one 😎😎😎

Once painted, I added a new shade and placed the lamp in my closet room.

I like the way that having this counter level light in the middle of the room (on an island of drawers) makes the room quieter and more restful.  And of course, it's pretty!

A Little bit of Change

Kitchen Change

I mentioned in my last post that I moved a few things around this summer.  Mostly this involved a bit of summer decor rearranging and upgrading but I also ended up moving my bakers rack.

I loved having my bakers rack in the kitchen, but it was starting to feel crowded.  The kids are bigger now and I didn't like how the entry to the laundry room (where garage door is) was being narrowed - it's crazy how much bigger people are when they are wearing back packs! πŸ˜†  Plus, I was feeling like my fake cookie and cake obsession was taking over the kitchen.

Now I'm all about collecting, but I can't stand clutter.  It was time to condense everything into one tidy place.  With a little coaxing and nudging, all of the cakes and cookies fit into the existing china cabinet.  It looked great and left me with the unused bakers rack that I didn't have another spot for inside the house.......but I thought, "why not the porch?"

You can click here to read my summer decor post,
or here to read about the bakers rack.

On the Porch

I figured this would be sort of an experiment.  I snagged a large rock from our landscaping and put it on the bottom shelf thinking that the wind might be a problem, but it turns out that only the small fern on the very top ever gets blown around.  I also thought that rain might cause some issued, but even through heavy, windy downpours the shelf stays dry.  So far, the biggest issue has been wiping the occasional spider web, not too bad!

The kids really like having the drawer available as that is where we decided to store their bug boxes and bug nets.  Now when we sit on the porch in the evenings, everything they need for catching fireflies is right there on hand 😎

Since this is still in the experiment stage, I haven't done much other than set out a few random plants that I didn't want in the house anymore.

Top:  I found this artificial fern at Good Will some time ago.  I liked it (because I like anything fake and ferns make me think of dinosaurs, which I love - totally common 😁), but it doesn't really fit in with my indoor style.

Middle:  These pots of faux grass were treasure hunting finds from last year.  Since the containers are a bit too modern for me, they also went outside.

Bottom:  I love me some ivy, but this basket wasn't doing it for me as an indoor container. I think it's ok for the porch, though.  (You can click here to read about my basket issues πŸ˜‚)

That's it for now.  I hope everyone is having a great start to their summer, thanks for stopping by!

Thrifting Haul!

Around the middle of February I tend to get really tired of winter and ready for spring.  Not just for the sunshine and warmer weather, but the garage sales of course!  Since I still had weeks of winter to get through, I decided to take a couple of trips to the local Good Will stores (this past February and March) to help hold me over πŸ˜„

Now I can't remember the prices of each item, but I can tell you that they ranged between $2 & $4 with many of them being half off for 'color of the week'.

What is the color of the week?  Good Will merchandise is marked with a color tag; red, blue, yellow, green or black with one of the colors being half off each week.  Look for the sign when you walk in the store to know which color is currently half off the marked price πŸ˜‰

And now, check out my finds:

An artificial boxwood, decorative letter and plaster molding.

Right now I'm trying to decide if the boxwood is for Spring, everyday or back porch decor.  I'm sure it will probably end up as all three before it's over with 😁

The big letter H is stashed with my crafts while I decide who to give it to and the decorative molding is in a 'future' box.  That means that I love it, but don't currently have a place to use it πŸ˜‰

Candle Sconces

These are also in my future box.
Shhh, I don't have a collecting problem, this is all just good planning 😎

Mixing Bowels

These ivy printed Corelle bowls match the everyday plates and bowels that we use at the table.  I'm not sure how I'll use them - I have glass bowels to keep all of our fruit washed and ready to eat in the fridge and I prefer plastic bowls for mixing - but I had to have these because the remind me of my Granny as she bought me our table set.

Faux Artichokes

Artificial artichokes are something I didn't already have so when I saw a bag of them I was like, "Yep, need those." 😁

Milk Glass

I was really excited to find the baking dishes.  I have a ton of decorative milk glass already, so I think it's absolutely time to start collecting functional pieces as well πŸ˜‰

Update:  I now eat my nightly popcorn snack out of a vintage milk glass bowl 😏

**********

And that is how I made it through the last few harrowing weeks of winter.  I hope you enjoyed my thrifting haul, thanks for stopping by!

French China Cabinet

Let's finally talk about my French china cabinet, isn't it pretty?!
Read on to learn all about this thrifting find:

Old Cabinet

If you remember, I used to have this white and natural baking cabinet at one end of the kitchen.  I called this piece my baker's cabinet because it's where I kept my cupcake collection and cake pans, but it is actually a microwave stand.

(You can click here to see more)

This cabinet was a hand-me-down when we moved in and I liked it because it had glass doors and featured the white and natural wood combination.  It did have several flaws; crooked doors, a drawer front that had been glued into place, scratched up and stained backing that had to be covered with contact paper... but I loved it just the same.  Why?  Because it's the look I'm going for.  My eventual dream kitchen will have white cabinetry, light wood butcher block counters and white appliances.  I'm all about light, bright and avoiding trends (no stainless steel or granite counters here) in fact, I plan on doing my bathrooms the same way!  But anyway, back to the cabinet.....

Husby hated this cabinet, but he agreed that it would work until a better replacement was found.  And by 'agree' I mean he said: "Fine, but I'm not moving that cheap piece of crap to our good house, Id rather build you a new one".  Which prompted a whole, "Wait, you are planning on building me furniture too?!?!"  line of questioning from me.  (I knew he intended on building our forever home, but the furniture was a new idea to me.  So then of course I was off looking into built-ins, cabinetry and making sketches!) 😁

Again, back to the cabinet.....

New Cabinet

So let's go back to late summer/ early fall when I began thrifting.  I was in one of the local Good Will stores when I saw this gorgeous china cabinet.  But since I was new to the Good Will store, I didn't know that I had to flip the tag over to find the price.  I assumed that no price meant that the item had been sold and went on about my business.  I couldn't stop thinking about it though, I knew it would look so great painted white and standing in my kitchen!

A few weeks later I was in the Good Will store again and the cabinet was still there.  By looking more closely at furniture nearby, I realized that the prices were on the back of the tags.  I was excited until I reached the cabinet and saw that the pricing area had been torn off.  Again I assumed that the piece had sold and must be waiting on a customer pick-up πŸ˜–

A few more weeks passed by and it was time to celebrate our Anniversary.  We had an entire day of childcare arranged and were tossing around ideas of how to spend the time when Husby suggested going thrifting!  Yayyyyy!  We headed to a few different stores and shops before ending up at that very same Good Will.....where the cabinet was still sitting!  By now I figured something was up, someone must have torn off the tag and not actually purchased the item.  After speaking to the manager we found out that was indeed what happened, and.....drum roll please.... that the cabinet was only $49.99!!!!!  I asked Husby what he thought about me painting it white and he was on board, so we brought it home.

Fun Fact:  We looked up the cabinet and learned that it is a vintage French china cabinet made by the Bassett company and it's worth a whole lot more than $49.99 πŸ˜‰

Happy Anniversary!

Organization

Left:  A random mix of milk glass and colorful ceramic.
Right:  An organized display with the milk glass separated from the cupcakes.

Once I got the cabinet home and cleaned, I couldn't resist filling it up.  First of all, it was just plain fun!  Secondly, having the additional shelving space meant that I could finally unleash all of the milk glass I've been collecting.

Do you remember those ivy printed hat boxes that live on top of my kitchen cabinetry?  Well they are more than just decor, I also hide stuff in them.  Wonderful stuff, like milk glass that I didn't have room to display!

(You can click here to see what I'm talking about)

So I started arranging the cabinet by dispersing my colorful cupcake ceramics throughout and then filling in with the milk glass.  I didn't like it but I couldn't figure out why.  After a couple of days I finally realized that having the cupcakes all over the place made the cabinet look too busy and unorganized.  I emptied the cabinet out and started over, this time keeping the cupcakes to the middle shelf only.  When I was done it looked so much better!

Tip:  Collecting is fun, but can easily get out of hand once things begin to look cluttered.  You can cut down on the mess by grouping similar items together, as evident in the photo on the right.

Close-Up

Here is a better photo that shows the difference that organization can make.

Tip:  Ok, so after I spent a half an hour arranging everything into the cabinet, what about when I had to paint it and take everything out again?  No problem, I snapped a few photos of each shelf once they were arranged the way that I liked.  That way once the cabinet was ready, I was able to look at the photos and get everything back into place quickly.

I use this tip a lot when I do my yearly cleaning as well.  Cleaning is enough of a chore all at once, I don't want to stop and have to worry about artistic arrangement at the same time πŸ˜‰

In Progress

Painting this cabinet took a lot of time.

First it had to be cleaned and sanded, and then it took three coats of paint.  But you know what?  I really enjoyed the process.  It was actually kind of relaxing.  In fact, I think I'm going to tackle the curio cabinet in my living room next πŸ˜‰

Pretty Hardware

I kept the existing hardware, but freshened it up with a coat of gold paint.
So.  Much.  Better!

All Done!

Here you can see the piece all complete and with the milk glass/ cupcakes properly arranged inside.  I'm so pleased with how it turned out!  Now just imagine if that pantry was painted white as well.....with beige-y walls, white trim, larger creamy tiles laid on the diagonal.....just kidding!
I'll wait on all that until we move  πŸ˜

I hope you enjoyed this post, thanks for stopping by!

Milk Glass Lamps

Hello, hello!
Remember my last post where I mentioned my newest venture into the art of thrifting?  Well let me tell you, I am having a blast!

It was during my second trip to the Good Will store when I saw a display of lampshades and remembered that I needed to replace the lamp in our master bedroom.  Our previous lamp was pretty: gold with a cream shade, but beyond repair.  It turns out that lamps can only handle being tipped off of the top shelf so many times before they end up in the trash.  Luckily, the Little Man has learned to climb into our bed now without using my nightstand-bookshelf as a climbing wall :D

Anyway,  so there I was looking at lampshades and wondering if there were any lamps for sale when I turned around a saw......two matching MILK GLASS lamps!!!!  Yayyyy!  A quick text to the Husby to see if the lamps were safe to use (vintage electrical) and we were in business.

Pretty Little Lamp

The lamps were $7 each and needed a bit of attention as well as new shades.

Imperfections

After cleaning the lamps you  could see that the finish was a bit damaged.  No problem, let me just whip out a can of spray paint.  Gold, of course ;)

Tape it Up

Before beginning, it's useful to tape off the areas that you don't want covered in paint.  Since I was using spray paint, I went ahead and covered the remaining areas of exposed glass, but you get the idea.

Fresh & Pretty

Such a difference a little bit of paint can make!

Add a Shade

I picked up the shades at Wal-Mart for $6, that makes two lamps for a total of $26!
(I already had the gold spray paint on hand, so no expense there)

Vintage Glow

I love the way the lamps look at night, so soft and pretty.  They really highlight the climbing wall - I mean nightstand-bookshelf - too, don't you think?!?!

As far as thrifting goes, I'm definitely hooked.  Just a little bit more work on my French china cabinet, and I can share that with you too :)

I hope you enjoyed this thrifting post, thanks for stopping by!
